The February Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) characteristic of the month at Whittier Elementary is Empathy! Students in Ms. K Jones’s class practiced empathy in class! Each month, teachers distribute Whittier Wow tickets to students as they display the characteristics taught in the PBIS program. Students are given the opportunity to spend their WOW tickets at our Whittier store for fun prizes. Thank you to Mr. Young for organizing this program to spread positivity at Whittier!

Last week, students in Miss K. & Miss Johnson's first grade class at Whittier Elementary celebrated the 100th day of school!

In honor of Black History Month, our District 152 staff showed off their door decorations. Check out Brooks Middle School Social Worker-Ms. Buchanan's “HBCU Door to Success," featuring school pride hoodies from historically black colleges and universities. Also, look at Mrs. Conley, showing off her Black History “Wall of Fame” and her “Hidden Figures” door honoring Katherine Johnson, who’s mathematical calculations helped NASA astronauts get to the moon and back. Great Job, Brooks. Stay tuned for more decorations and events!

In observance of Presidents Day, Harvey School District 152 buildings will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20. Enjoy the extended weekend!

Last week, Holmes Elementary Students took a field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry! The students enjoyed a visit to the city to engage in interactive learning spaces.

We LOVE seeing our students at school each day! For the month of January, first grade students at Maya Angelou Elementary School had the best attendance. As a reward, they were able to pick out a Beanie Baby or a toy! The grade with the greatest improvement in February will earn a light-up bracelet. Good attendance is so important and means that you only miss school if you are sick. Keep up the great work, students!

Congratulations to our District Wide Spelling Bee Champions! After 27 rounds of spelling, the winners were announced: 1st Place: Donnell Lockett (Brooks Middle School) 2nd Place: Antonio Delgade (Bryant Elementary School) 3rd Place: Mason Brooks (Bryant Elementary School) Proud Principal Mr. Darrell Anderson congratulated the winners, all of which were either current or former students of Bryant Elementary School. Also in attendance were Board President Casey Nesbit, Board Member Myra Gardner and Co-Interim Superintendent Dr. Barbara Mason. Thank you to all involved in organizing the event including our district judges, including Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Graton, Mr. Young, Dr. Moore, Mrs. Smith and word pronouncer Mr. Hill!

Congratulations to Whittier Schools Spelling Bee Winners! 1st place: Firdoos Vhora 2nd place : Dijuan Parker 3rd place Ely Velazquez These students competed on Wednesday night at the District level Spelling Bee Competition. Our district-wide winners will go on to compete with other schools in the area.

Last week, 20 Brooks Middle School parents learned first aid and CPR through Training Concepts by the American Red Cross! Parents learned how to perform adult, child and infant CPR, along with AED (Advance Emergency Defibrillator) machine training. Thank you to Brooks Middle School parent coordinator Ms. McDowell for being instrumental in organizing this class for other parents. Other schools within the district will be offering sessions on this life-saving skill this semester.

Congratulations to the winners of the Bryant Elementary school-wide spelling bee! First place: Antonio Delgade (Mr. Clark’s fifth-grade class) Second place: Iyana Onojeta (Ms. Schaller’s third-grade class) Third place: Mason Brooks (Ms. Dabney’s fourth-grade class) These scholars will move on to the district spelling bee tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. at Brooks Middle School. Congratulations to the Holmes Elementary School Blue Jay Cart raffle winners! These students displayed positive behaviors in their classrooms during the month of January and were entered into the raffle. Way to go, students! T3 Workshops (Teachers Train Teachers) were in session this week! Harvey School District 152 teachers conducted workshops with their colleagues to showcase their expertise, inspire best practices and share teaching strategies to improve instruction. The educators created a “Make and Take Literacy Center”.

February is Black History Month! It is a time for reflection on US history, appreciation for Black American ancestors and the formation of a better future. We look forward to celebrating Black Americans of the past, present and future with our students this month!

Here’s a flashback to our annual Shop with the Sheriff Holiday Shopping Spree, which was a success! On Dec. 24, Cook County sheriff’s deputies went on a special shopping trip with students from our district. Thank you to Sherriff Castillo and Sheriff Armstrong for your continued partnership with Harvey School District 152!

Riley Early Childhood Center pre-K students were fashion designers for a day! With the help of their teacher Ms. Solorio, students gathered pieces of material to create a special outfit for themselves for a wall decoration fashion show. Beautiful work, students!
